The "Zurich meets San Francisco" festival took place from October 20 to 26, 2018, and attracted around 2,500 participants to various cultural, culinary, economic, and educational events. The event facilitated economic, scientific, and cultural exchange between the two cities, reaching an additional 7 million people through its web presence and social media.

The festival kicked off with experimental culture and cuisine, featuring performances by Swiss bands "None of Them" and "Tim & Puma Mimi," as well as artists from San Francisco. The culinary series "Chef meets Chef" saw top chefs from Zurich and San Francisco create fusion cuisine masterpieces.

The festival also fostered scientific exchange on future challenges. ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences organized events in collaboration with American partners, such as San José State University (SJSU), UC Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Topics included governance of metropolitan areas, data science, and lean design, construction, and facility management.

The University of Zurich (UZH) hosted a panel discussion on the impact of digitization on democracy, featuring speakers from Stanford University, Wikimedia, and the Human Rights Data Analysis Group. The "Urban Tech Summit" gathered representatives from Zurich and San Francisco's governments, experts from the World Economic Forum, stakeholders from startups and established companies like Uber and Tesla, and academics from the University of Zurich, UC Berkeley, and MIT to discuss the future of mobility and transportation in smart cities.

The city of Winterthur organized a seminar on the importance of practice and labor market-oriented training with the Global Apprenticeship Network GAN, California Workforce Association, and Social Policy Research Associates SPR. The festival also expanded political contacts and promoted economic networking. A new Memorandum of Understanding was signed to foster exchange in drug policy and environmental protection.

Zurich continues its international outreach, having previously connected with New York, Milan, London, and Hong Kong, to further promote exchange and international networking.
